Beneath S01E05: After the Cat Cafe
The investigators took the mummy, Kharis, to a cat cafe to ask about what was going on. Kharis (his words translated by Angus) advised that his role was to murder the thieves that took the scrollcase, and to take it back to the Library of Ages. (The cats tolerated Kharis's presence, Angus's visits had socialised them to the presence of undead.)
Kharis didn't know what was in the scroll, but thought it had something to do with granting the bearer authority or presence. It was associated with the kings of old. Both Angus and Alix had heard of occultists; those people who cast spells from relics, items that collected the unstable and unpredictable intrinsic magic of the world. Angus knew most of these people were rich, and that it was likely that the collectors would desire it. Angus was also concerned about the presence of the revenant, Mr. Hargreaves, who appeared to be orchestrating events.
Rufus proposed that the group return to the Reading Room to see what they could learn. Angus waited until he could no longer sense Hargreaves's presence. With Rufus's credit card still holding the door ajar, the group slipped inside. Inside, the two employees, the Curator (Jorgad Stover) and his bookkeeper, Julia Blackbay, discussed events in low tones.
When the investigators were detected, the Curator, Jorgad Stover, sprinted away through the back entrance towards the Metro. Alix and Angus gave chase. Stover activated a relic and became invisible. However, Angus could still see him and could point the way for Alix to follow.
Jorgad made it to the Metro entrance, but Alix tackled him down the stairs and put him in protective custody.
Meanwhile, Rufus and Kharis persuaded Julia to turn herself in. Kharis had promised not to hurt the suspects, but did a good job of intimidating Julia, while Rufus promised to protect her if she turned herself in.
Back at the police station, Julia admitted that she didn't have the big picture, but the scroll case had already been sold to Cymbaline Huevre, who was planning to auction it the following evening. Julia said she only worked for the Curator and didn't have the big picture over what was going on.
Alix hacked Julia's laptop and got a good picture of the historical relics that the Curator bought and sold.
The Curator called his lawyer in, and didn't say a lot during interrogation.
While reviewing his items, Alix found some guest passes to the soiree tomorrow at Cymbaline's house, the White Tower. However, Rufus had requested a warrant from the judge. The investigators had to decide whether to sneakily enter the party in disguise, or raid it with the full force of the law.
