Beneath S02E02: The Crack in the World
The investigators headed downtown to check out Zala's apartment. They spoke with her bodyguard, Rorgad Oaksplitter, her friends, checked out the scene and put together a timeline of events:
- 11:30 PM — Zala finishes at the charity ball.
- 12:10 AM — Zala enters her apartment. Rorgad Oaksplitter is on duty outside her door. Both prepare for bed. Rorgad sets the alarm and goes to his room to sleep.
[Angus determined that Zala had access to some kind of artefact that she was speaking to. Rufus noted that Zala left her phone on its charger, but this was some public-facing phone, and not the one she regularly used.
- 12:30 AM — Rorgad hears Zala moving around inside the apartment. Humming. Running water. Normal. He falls asleep.
- 1:25 AM — Zala enters the elevator and descends. (After some hacking and running video tape, Alix confirmed that Zala did not enter the metro.)
- 1:44 AM — Zala's close friend, Lucy Archivist (another influencer on VidHub with a more hardcore historical slant), receives a phone call from Zala, saying that the theory about the 'Labyrinth' was true. That there are ways to enter the true Labyrinth around the city. Zala was going to prove this, especially theories about the world's prelapsarian era. This point marked the last activity on Zala's phone according to the nearest CPS tower. She was about seven kilometres away from where her body was found.
The investigators returned to Copper Square, which was close to Zala's last movements.
Rufus noted her scent vanished from the ground. Angus saw that there was something magically odd about the obelisk in Copper Square with his truesight, like there were two obelisks occupying the same place and overlapping with each other. And Alix stumbled over a strange crack in the air, like a doorway.
Lying beneath was a phone, that was rusting apart, as though it had been exposed to the elements for a hundred years.
